Doosan H2 Innovation announced on September 9th that it has started demonstration and low-temperature stationary solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP).

Low-temperature stationary SOFC installed on hydrogen fuel cell testbed at KHNP. Developed by Doosan H2 Innovation, Doosan Fuel Cell is in charge of mass production of cell Stack, which is a key component, manufacturing and commercialization of SOFC system.

As a specialized company in charge of research and development of hydrogen fuel cells within Doosan Group, Doosan H2 Innovation has played a central role in developing medium and low-temperature SOFC by establishing a close collaboration with R&D sectors such as Doosan Fuel Cell and Hyaxiom. The SOFC has high power efficiency and operates at 620°C, about 200°C lower than the existing SOFC, which has a relatively longer life expectancy.

Doosan H2 Innovation plans to verify the performance and safety of mid- and low-temperature SOFCs by conducting a 2,000 hour (about 3 months) test on a testbed built by KHNP last year and secure operating data for full-fledged business implementation.
Doosan Fuel Cell is in charge of mass production of cell Stack, a core component of SOFC. In addition to this, the company will manufacture and commercialize SOFC system. Having built a 50MW mass production system at its Gunsan plant in Saemangeum Industrial Complex, Doosan Fuel Cell plans to enter the market in earnest from 2025. As a result, Doosan Fuel Cell has secured SOFCs with high power efficiency following the phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), which produces heat and electricity at the same time, and has been able to respond flexibly to customer and market demand by diversifying its product portfolio.

It is also expected to contribute to the qualitative and quantitative expansion of the domestic hydrogen fuel cell industry ecosystem in the future since cell stack of the SOFC, core components, have also been successfully localized.

“Doosan's commercialization of mid- and low-temperature stationary SOFCs will be an important turning point in the domestic power generation market, given the high dependency of foreign SOFCs so far,” says an official from Doosan H2 Innovation. "We will remain committed to taking the lead in revitalizing the domestic hydrogen industry ecosystem through successful demonstration with KHNP."

Meanwhile, Doosan Fuel Cell is also preparing for maritime SOFC business. Last March, it said that the core parts of marine SOFC have passed the environmental test standards of Norwegian shipping association, Det Norske Veritas(DNV), one of the world's top three shipping associations. Doosan Fuel Cell plans to complete the test and certification of the entire SOFC system within this year and deliver the maritime SOFCs.
