Doosan Fuel Cell Develops Carbon Capture Technology for Hydrogen fuel cells in Collaboration with KHNP and other partners

- Capture over 90% of carbon dioxide, contributing to carbon neutrality

2025-03-14

Doosan Fuel Cell has co-developed Korea’s first hydrogen fuel cell carbon capture technology with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and other partners. The ‘Fuel Cell Carbon Capture Technology Demonstration Event’, held on March 12 in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province, was attended by officials such as Doosan Fuel Cell’s CEO Doosoon Lee, Gwangyang Deputy Mayor Kim Ki-hong, and KHNP’s Green business division head Kim Hyeong-il.

The hydrogen fuel cell carbon capture technology development project, led by KHNP, began in September 2023, with Doosan Fuel Cell, Airrane, and KECC participating and exchanging technical know-how. Doosan Fuel Cell was responsible for redesigning the hydrogen fuel cells, Airrane handled the membrane capture technology, and KECC managed the installation. The companies installed hydrogen fuel cells and membrane capture systems at Maritime Industry Cluster Harbor, located in Yeosu Gwangyang Port, in December last year and completed the pilot operation in January of this year.

The newly developed carbon capture technology can capture more than 90% of the carbon dioxide generated during the process of extracting hydrogen from natural gas (NG). For example, a 10MW hydrogen fuel cell power plant can reduce approximately 97 tons of carbon dioxide per day.

An official from Doosan Fuel Cell stated, “Thanks to the development of carbon capture technology, we expect hydrogen fuel cell power plants to be eco-friendly power plants, and they will significantly reduce carbon footprints,  ontributing to the realization of carbon neutrality.”
